Copyright Policy

Game masters and players upload a lot to Narrative Nexus: maps, portraits, handouts, homebrew, and imported rulebook pages. Artists share portfolios and commission files. If something here copies your work without permission, tell us and we will take it down. This page explains how, under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (17 U.S.C. § 512).

1. Our designated agent

Send copyright notices and counter-notices to our designated agent. Email is fastest.

Copyright Agent
Narrative Nexus LLC
5900 Balcones Dr, STE 100, Austin, TX 78731
Phone: 512-829-7124
Email: copyright@narrative.sh

This agent is registered with the U.S. Copyright Office as DMCA-1081184. You can confirm it in the DMCA Designated Agent Directory. The agent handles copyright only. Other legal questions go to legal@narrative.sh.

2. Sending a copyright notice

If you own a copyright, or are authorized to act for the owner, and believe material on Narrative Nexus infringes it, send a written notice to our agent. A notice needs to include:

  1. A physical or electronic signature of the copyright owner or a person authorized to act on their behalf. A typed full name works for email.
  2. Identification of the copyrighted work you believe is infringed, or a representative list if one notice covers several works.
  3. Identification of the material you believe infringes, with enough detail for us to find it. The page URL is best, plus a description if the page holds several items.
  4. Your contact information: name, mailing address, phone number, and email address.
  5. A statement that you have a good faith belief that the use is not authorized by the copyright owner, its agent, or the law.
  6. A statement that the information in the notice is accurate and, under penalty of perjury, that you are the copyright owner or authorized to act on the owner's behalf.

You can also send a notice from the page itself. Everything people upload carries a “Report” control. Choose “Copyright or other IP”, tick “I own this work or represent the owner (DMCA notice)”, and give us an email address. That report counts as a notice when it carries every element above: describe the work and the material, include your mailing address and phone number, make both statements, and type your full name as your signature.

A notice missing these elements may not be something we can act on. If it comes close, we will write back to ask for what is missing.

Under 17 U.S.C. § 512(f), anyone who knowingly misrepresents that material is infringing can be liable for damages, including our costs and attorneys' fees. Consider whether the use might be licensed or a fair use before you send a notice. If you are unsure, talk to a lawyer.

3. What happens next

A person reads every notice. When a notice is complete, we promptly put the material it identifies on hold. A held item is hidden everywhere it appears on Narrative Nexus, and uploaded files are moved out of public reach, so our storage no longer serves them. We do not delete anything ourselves while it is on hold: if we got it wrong, or the material is restored after a counter-notice, it comes back exactly as it was, at the same address.

We tell the user who posted it what was taken down and why, in their Narrative Nexus inbox and by email unless they have switched those emails off. That message names who sent the notice and how to reach them, and explains how to send a counter-notice. If you sent your notice through the Report control, we tell you the outcome once a person has decided.

4. Sending a counter-notice

If material you posted was removed because of a copyright notice and you believe it was removed by mistake or misidentification, you can send a counter-notice to our agent. It must include:

  1. Your physical or electronic signature.
  2. Identification of the material that was removed and where it appeared before it was removed.
  3. A statement, under penalty of perjury, that you have a good faith belief the material was removed or disabled as a result of mistake or misidentification.
  4. Your name, address, and phone number, and a statement that you consent to the jurisdiction of the Federal District Court for the judicial district where your address is located (or, if you are outside the United States, any judicial district in which Narrative Nexus may be found), and that you will accept service of process from the person who sent the original notice or their agent.

When we receive a complete counter-notice, we forward a copy to the person who sent the original notice and tell them we will restore the material in 10 business days. We put it back no less than 10 and no more than 14 business days after receiving the counter-notice, unless our agent first hears that they have filed a court action seeking to stop you from posting it.

Section 512(f) cuts both ways: knowingly misrepresenting that material was removed by mistake can also make you liable for damages.

5. Repeat infringers

We terminate, in appropriate circumstances, the accounts of users who repeatedly infringe copyrights. Here is how we count:

  • Each item of yours we take down after a complete notice is a strike against your account. A notice that names three of your maps counts as three.
  • A strike is cleared if the notice is withdrawn, or if the material is restored, for example after a valid counter-notice or because we find we got it wrong.
  • An account that collects three strikes within any 12 months is terminated, along with any other accounts we find that person operating.
  • We may terminate sooner for flagrant infringement, such as an account that exists to share copied rulebooks or art.

If your account is terminated and you believe we made a mistake, write to our agent at copyright@narrative.sh and a person will review it.

6. Other kinds of reports

Trademark concerns, illegal content, and questions about our licensed compendium content follow the process in Terms of Service §12. Everything people upload carries a “Report” control for those too, and reports follow the same hold and restore process described above. The licenses behind the compendium are listed on Legal & Licenses.
