Perception

Wisdom-based non-skill proficiency for detecting hidden creatures, rolling initiative, and sensing motive, separate from the standard skill list.

Perception is not a skill in PF2e — it is a separate proficiency that uses your Wisdom modifier.

Formula: Perception = d20 + Wisdom modifier + proficiency bonus

Uses:

  • Seek (1 action): Look around carefully to detect hidden or undetected creatures and objects. Roll Perception against the Stealth or Deception DCs of hidden creatures.
  • Initiative: When combat starts and you're using your senses, roll Perception for initiative instead of a skill.
  • Sense Motive: During social encounters, attempt Perception to detect dishonesty or judge attitudes.
  • Passive Perception: The GM compares creature Stealth against your Perception DC (10 + Perception modifier) to determine if hidden creatures are noticed automatically.

Starting Proficiency by Class:

Senses: Characters may have special senses:

  • Low-light vision: Treat dim light as bright light
  • Darkvision: See in darkness as though dim light
  • Tremorsense: Detect vibrations through ground contact
  • Scent: Imprecise sense based on smell

Higher Perception proficiency reaches Master at mid-levels for most classes (5-13), representing sharpened awareness.
