Focus Spells and Innate Spells

Focus spells use a rechargeable focus point pool (max 3, Refocus for 10 min). Innate spells come from ancestry/heritage with daily uses. Neither uses class spell slots.

Beyond prepared and spontaneous slot-based spellcasting, PF2e features two additional spell systems.

Focus Spells: Focus spells are special abilities fueled by a pool of focus points rather than spell slots. They auto-heighten to half your character level.

  • Focus Pool: You start with 1 focus point when you first gain a focus spell. Feats and class features can increase your pool to a maximum of 3 points.
  • Casting: Spending 1 focus point casts the focus spell. Some focus spells have additional costs or conditions.
  • Refocusing: The Refocus activity (10 minutes of meditation, prayer, or practice) restores 1 focus point. Some class features allow restoring more.
  • Examples: Champion's Lay on Hands (healing), Monk's Ki Strike (bonus damage), Bard's Inspire Courage (party buff), Druid's Wild Shape (transformation), Wizard's Hand of the Apprentice (ranged Strike).

Innate Spells: Innate spells come from your ancestry, heritage, or certain magical abilities rather than from a class spellcasting tradition.

  • Usage: Innate spells have their own number of uses per day (often 1/day). Some innate cantrips are at-will.
  • Tradition: Each innate spell specifies which tradition it follows (arcane, divine, occult, or primal). This determines which ability modifier you use.
  • Heightening: Innate spells are typically auto-heightened to half your level unless stated otherwise. Some are fixed at a specific rank.
  • No Slots Required: Innate spells do not consume your class spell slots.

Distinction: Focus spells recharge every 10 minutes (one at a time). Innate spells recover on daily preparation. Neither consumes spell slots.
