Spell Scrolls
One-use items to cast a spell from your class list without components or slots. Higher-level scrolls require an ability check. Consumed on use.
A spell scroll contains a single spell written in a mystical cipher. If the spell is on your class's spell list, you can use the scroll to cast the spell without providing components or using a spell slot.
Using a scroll:
- The spell must be on your class's spell list.
- If the spell is of a level you can normally cast, you cast it successfully with no check required.
- If the spell is of a higher level than you can normally cast, you must make an ability check using your spellcasting ability (DC 10 + spell level). On failure, the spell disappears from the scroll with no effect.
- The scroll is consumed whether the casting succeeds or fails.
- The spell's casting time, range, and other properties are unchanged.
Scroll level and save DC/attack bonus:
| Spell Level | Save DC | Attack Bonus |
|---|---|---|
| Cantrip | 13 | +5 |
| 1st | 13 | +5 |
| 2nd | 13 | +5 |
| 3rd | 15 | +7 |
| 4th | 15 | +7 |
| 5th | 17 | +9 |
| 6th | 17 | +9 |
| 7th | 18 | +10 |
| 8th | 18 | +10 |
| 9th | 19 | +11 |
Wizard copying: A Wizard can copy a spell scroll into their spellbook. This requires an Arcana check (DC 10 + spell level), and the scroll is destroyed whether the check succeeds or fails. On success, the Wizard adds the spell to their spellbook.
Who can use scrolls: Only characters with the spell on their class spell list can use spell scrolls. A Fighter without spellcasting cannot use a scroll of fireball. The Thief Rogue's Use Magic Device feature (level 13) bypasses this restriction.
