Multiclass Spellcasting

Multiclass spell slots use combined caster level (full/half/third). Known spells tracked per class. Warlock Pact Magic stays separate.

When a character has levels in multiple spellcasting classes, their spell slots are determined by a combined spellcaster level, but their known/prepared spells are tracked separately.

Calculating Multiclass Caster Level

Add together:

Look up the resulting total on the full caster spell slot table.

Example: A level 5 Wizard / level 4 Paladin has a combined caster level of 5 + 2 = 7. They use the level 7 row of the full caster table (4/3/3/1 slots).

Known and Prepared Spells

Each class tracks its own spells independently:

  • The Wizard prepares spells as a level 5 Wizard (INT mod + 5 prepared from the Wizard list)
  • The Paladin prepares spells as a level 4 Paladin (CHA mod + 2 prepared from the Paladin list)
  • But both use the shared multiclass spell slot pool to cast any of their prepared spells

Pact Magic Exception

Warlock Pact Magic does not combine with other spellcasting. Pact Magic slots are separate from the multiclass pool. However, you can use Pact Magic slots to cast spells from other classes and vice versa. Pact Magic slots still recharge on a short rest.

Cantrips

Cantrips are not affected by multiclassing — each class grants its own cantrips, and cantrip damage scales with total character level (not class level).

Practical Impact

Multiclassing spellcasters gain access to higher-level spell slots faster than either class would alone, but can only learn spells up to the level their individual class can prepare. A Wizard 3 / Cleric 3 has the slots of a 6th-level caster (including 3rd-level slots) but can only prepare 2nd-level spells from either class.
