Deception

Charisma-based skill for lying, bluffing, and creating false impressions.

Deception covers misleading others through lies, misdirection, and false impressions. It is governed by Charisma.

When to roll: The DM calls for a Deception check when a character attempts to lie convincingly or conceal the truth.

Common uses:

  • Telling a convincing lie under questioning
  • Maintaining a false identity or disguise
  • Bluffing during a game of chance or negotiation
  • Misleading a guard about your intentions
  • Sending false non-verbal signals

Contested checks: Deception is typically contested by the target's Wisdom (Insight) check.

Proficiency: Rogue, Bard, and Warlock commonly have Deception proficiency.
