Two-Handed
Requires two hands to attack. Can't use with a shield or while grappling. Trades defense for higher damage dice.
Two-Handed (Weapon Property)
A two-handed weapon requires both hands to wield when making an attack.
Mechanical effect: You must use two hands to make an attack with this weapon. You can still hold the weapon in one hand when not attacking (e.g., while moving or interacting with objects), but you need both hands for the attack itself.
Two-handed weapons in the SRD:
| Weapon | Damage | Other Properties |
|---|---|---|
| Greatclub | 1d8 bludgeoning | Simple |
| Glaive | 1d10 slashing | Heavy, reach |
| Greataxe | 1d12 slashing | Heavy |
| Greatsword | 2d6 slashing | Heavy |
| Halberd | 1d10 slashing | Heavy, reach |
| Maul | 2d6 bludgeoning | Heavy |
| Pike | 1d10 piercing | Heavy, reach |
| Light crossbow | 1d8 piercing | Ammunition, loading |
| Shortbow | 1d6 piercing | Ammunition |
| Heavy crossbow | 1d10 piercing | Ammunition, heavy, loading |
| Longbow | 1d8 piercing | Ammunition, heavy |
Implications:
- You cannot use a shield while attacking with a two-handed weapon. This trades AC for higher damage.
- You cannot grapple while wielding a two-handed weapon (grappling requires a free hand).
- Spellcasters need a free hand for somatic components — they would need to release one hand from the weapon (free), cast the spell, and re-grip (free object interaction). The War Caster feat removes this limitation.
Great Weapon Fighting style: When you roll a 1 or 2 on a damage die for an attack with a two-handed melee weapon (or versatile weapon wielded in two hands), you can reroll the die and must use the new roll.
