Marshedge is a town of eight to nine hundred souls on the Highway, built on a rise overlooking Ferrier's Fen. Outsiders think its people mad to live so close to the Fen, but Marshedgers learned the ways of bendis root and the wetland's dangers long ago.
Marshedge is richer and more stratified than Stonetop: Old Families in High Town, Guild wealth, fen-walkers, Brennan and the Guard, Edgemarket, Low Town, the Mire, and Maker ruins under the Hill. It trades textiles, herbs, glass, rope, medicine, fine goods, and political complications.
Old Family heads
- Ianthe Ferrier — ailing matriarch of the Ferriers, still sharp
- Muiris Hawtrey — Hawtrey patriarch and one of Brennan's main allies
- Caineach Tricklebank — cagey Tricklebank elder, resentful of Ferrier prestige
- Ailbe Eldershaw — young Eldershaw head, thrust into leadership by an untimely death
Hooks
Marshedge brings trade, civic pressure, class tension, Fen bargains, Brennan's coercive peace, Old Family obligations, Guild ambition, and any problem where civilization does not mean safety.
