Fen-walkers gather herbs, peat, clay, and hard-won knowledge from Ferrier's Fen.
Marshedge does not love them and cannot do without them. The Fen-Walkers are the chartered band that works Ferrier's Fen — orphans, exiles, and the strange-eyed — granted privileges the town would never extend to its own children, because someone has to bring the herbs and game and peat out of the mire.
Fen-walkers gather herbs, hunt game, cut peat and clay, guide travelers, and keep Marshedge supplied with knowledge that safer folk lack. Many recruit from orphans and those with no prospects, and some hide strange mutations from exposure to the Fen. In Marshedge, the eldest fen-walker sits on the Council.

The seven-year bargain
A fen-walker leaves the Old Families' child at a grand willow every seven years and does not look back.
Hooks
Use fen-walkers as guides, scouts, herbalists, suspected mutants, or chartered executioners — the carriers of Marshedge's oldest bargains.
