Starfinder and Pathfinder characters are built using the same fundamental process, and allowing both sets of rules opens up even more options. In this section, we've outlined guidelines for each of these steps. Ultimately it's up to the GM to determine what abilities and themes are most appropriate for their campaign. Here's some advice for creating timeshifted characters. From the Pages of History While these rules are written under the assumption that you're playing a Pathfinder character in the Starfinder setting (or vice versa), there are generations of social and technological growth between the two eras! You can adjust these rules to account for characters from a post-industrial but pre-spacefaring era, including characters from our own time here on Earth! Finding a middle ground between the two rules might seem daunting, but plenty of technology and classes from both games can be adapted to fit characters from a contemporary setting with very few adjustments and have an arguably easier time adjusting to life in the Starfinder setting. Keeping up With the Times While many Pathfinder characters can adapt to the Starfinder setting with minimal mechanical adjustments, some might want to divest themselves of their archaic trappings and fully embrace the technology and techniques of the future. You might want to present this option early to your players so you can plan some downtime between levels where a PC could change classes. This would be a one-time exception to the rules that normally prevent changing classes, and you should only permit this when the two classes have similar themes. If the new class has a different key attribute, such as a fighter becoming a soldier, you should consider allowing them to retrain some of their attribute modifiers.
