Condition — Confused

Confused: can't distinguish allies, attack randomly, can't use reactions or complex actions. Ended by taking damage from an ally. Binary condition, no value.

You can't reliably distinguish friend from foe or control your own actions.

Mechanical Effects:

  • You don't treat anyone as your ally (including yourself for some effects)
  • You can't Delay, Ready, or use reactions
  • The GM determines your targets randomly among creatures around you
  • You use your most basic Strike or move actions — no complex tactics
  • If no enemies are nearby, you babble incoherently, wasting your actions
  • You automatically fail checks to Recall Knowledge or think clearly

How Applied:

  • Confusion spells (like confusion)
  • Some monster abilities (gaze attacks, psychic assaults)
  • Extreme magical effects
  • Critical failures on certain mental saves

How Removed:

  • Taking damage from an ally ends Confused (you snap out of it)
  • Duration expiry
  • Allies can use actions to try to talk you down (GM discretion)

Important Notes:

  • A Confused character can still deal full damage — they attack randomly, not weakly
  • The GM controls targeting, not the player
  • Confused does not have a value — it's binary
  • AoE attacks from a Confused character might hit allies

Tactical Impact: Confusion is devastating in tight quarters where a high-damage party member might attack allies. Spreading out reduces the chance of hitting friends. Dealing damage to the Confused ally is the quickest cure.
