Exploration Mode Activities

Exploration activities: [[compendium:action:Avoid Notice]] (stealth initiative), Defend (shield ready), [[compendium:spell:Detect Magic]], Hustle (double speed), Investigate, [[compendium:archetype:Scout]] (+1 initiative for allies), Search (auto-Seek). Travel speed varies by terrain.

During exploration mode — when the party travels, investigates, or navigates between encounters — each character declares an exploration activity. This determines what they're focused on and affects initiative if combat begins.

Avoid Notice (Stealth): Move stealthily. If combat begins, you roll Stealth for initiative and may start undetected or hidden.

Defend: Hold your shield raised and stay alert. You gain your shield's circumstance bonus to AC at the start of combat and are prepared for danger.

Detect Magic (Arcana, Nature, Occultism, Religion): Continuously scan for magical auras. You automatically detect magic within 30 feet after 6 seconds (one round). Doesn't reveal specifics — use Identify Magic for details.

Hustle: Move at double your travel speed for up to 10 minutes (Constitution modifier, minimum 1 minute). After hustling, you're fatigued.

Investigate (various skills): Study your surroundings in detail. Use Perception, a knowledge skill, or another appropriate skill to analyze the environment. Useful for noticing details the GM might otherwise only reveal on a check.

Repeat a Spell: Continuously cast the same spell (like Detect Magic or Light) so it stays active.

Scout (Perception): Watch for danger and enemies ahead. Allies who start combat gain a +1 circumstance bonus to initiative.

Search (Perception): Methodically search the area as you move. You automatically Seek in a 30-foot burst, detecting traps, hidden doors, and concealed creatures. Moving at half speed.

Travel Speed: Without Hustle, a party moves at the slowest member's Speed. Typical overland travel: 20 miles/day on roads, 15 off-road, 10 in difficult terrain. Mounts improve speed significantly.
