Finesse
Use either STR or DEX for attack and damage rolls. Essential for DEX-based melee characters and [[compendium:class:Rogue]] [[compendium:feat:Sneak Attack]].
Finesse (Weapon Property)
A finesse weapon lets you choose whether to use Strength or Dexterity for the attack and damage rolls. You use the same modifier for both rolls.
Why it matters: Most melee weapons use Strength, but finesse weapons let Dexterity-focused characters (Rogues, Monks, certain Fighters) use their best stat for melee attacks.
Finesse weapons in the SRD:
Sneak Attack requirement: Rogues can use Sneak Attack with finesse weapons (or ranged weapons). This makes finesse weapons essential for Rogue builds.
Key clarification: Finesse lets you choose — you don't have to use Dexterity. A high-Strength character can still use Strength with a finesse weapon. This matters for effects that key off which ability you use (e.g., Rage damage bonus requires Strength-based attacks).
Dual wielding: Since daggers, shortswords, and scimitars are both finesse and light, they are the primary choices for Dexterity-based two-weapon fighting.
