Ritual Casting
Spells with the ritual tag can be cast in 10 extra minutes without using a spell slot. Available to Wizards, Clerics, Druids, Bards, and via feats/invocations.
Certain spells have the ritual tag, meaning they can be cast without expending a spell slot by adding 10 extra minutes to the casting time.
How It Works
To cast a spell as a ritual, the spell must have the ritual tag in its description, and the caster must have a feature that allows ritual casting. The spell is cast as normal in all respects except: it takes 10 minutes longer, and it does not consume a spell slot. You can still cast a ritual spell using a spell slot if you want the normal casting time.
Who Can Ritual Cast
- Wizard: Can ritual-cast any spell in their spellbook with the ritual tag, even if the spell is not currently prepared.
- Cleric, Druid: Can ritual-cast spells with the ritual tag, but only if they have the spell prepared.
- Bard: Can ritual-cast any Bard spell they know with the ritual tag.
- Warlock (Pact of the Tome): The Book of Ancient Secrets invocation allows ritual casting from a ritual book that can contain rituals from any class list.
- Ritual Caster feat: Allows a character to learn and ritual-cast spells with the ritual tag from a chosen class's spell list.
Common Ritual Spells
Examples include: Detect Magic, Identify, Comprehend Languages, Find Familiar, Speak with Animals, Water Breathing, and Tiny Hut. These are especially useful because they provide consistent utility without draining spell slot resources.
