History

Intelligence-based skill for recalling historical facts, civilizations, wars, and ancient lore.

History covers knowledge of past events, civilizations, wars, legends, and ancient lore. It is governed by Intelligence.

When to roll: The DM calls for a History check when a character tries to recall historical knowledge or identify something with historical significance.

Common uses:

  • Recalling facts about kingdoms, wars, rulers, or famous historical figures
  • Identifying the origin of an artifact, architectural style, or cultural symbol
  • Understanding ancient writing systems or dead languages (alongside a language skill)
  • Knowing the history of a location, family, or organization

Proficiency: Wizard, Bard, Cleric, and Paladin commonly have History proficiency.
