Range
Two numbers: normal range (no penalty) and long range (disadvantage). Can't attack beyond long range. Ranged attacks within 5 ft of hostiles have disadvantage.
Range (Weapon Property)
Ranged weapons and thrown weapons specify two range numbers: normal range and long range.
How range works:
- Attacks within normal range are made normally.
- Attacks between normal range and long range are made with disadvantage.
- You cannot attack a target beyond long range.
Examples:
| Weapon | Normal/Long Range |
|---|---|
| Dagger (thrown) | 20/60 ft |
| Handaxe (thrown) | 20/60 ft |
| Javelin (thrown) | 30/120 ft |
| Shortbow | 80/320 ft |
| Longbow | 150/600 ft |
| Light crossbow | 80/320 ft |
| Heavy crossbow | 100/400 ft |
| Hand crossbow | 30/120 ft |
Ranged attacks in close quarters: Making a ranged attack while a hostile creature is within 5 feet of you imposes disadvantage on the attack roll. This applies to both ranged weapon attacks and ranged spell attacks. The Crossbow Expert feat eliminates this disadvantage.
Spells with range: Spell ranges are different from weapon ranges — spells have a single maximum range and no disadvantage at distance. A fire bolt with 120-foot range works equally well at 10 feet or 120 feet.
Cover and range: At long distances, targets are more likely to have partial cover from intervening terrain or obstacles, which adds to their AC.
