Hide Action

Make a [[compendium:skill:Stealth]] check vs. passive [[compendium:skill:Perception]] while obscured or behind cover. If hidden: advantage on attacks, disadvantage on attacks against you. Revealed when you attack.

Hide Action (Combat Action Detail)

The Hide action lets you attempt to become hidden from enemies by making a Dexterity (Stealth) check.

Requirements to hide:

  • You must be heavily obscured (in darkness, fog, etc.) or behind total cover from the creature you are hiding from.
  • You can't hide from a creature that can clearly see you.
  • The DM determines whether circumstances allow hiding.

The check: Make a Dexterity (Stealth) check. The result is compared against the passive Perception of each creature you are hiding from. If your Stealth result exceeds their passive Perception, you are hidden from them.

Benefits of being hidden:

  • Your location is unknown to creatures you are hidden from.
  • You have advantage on attack rolls against creatures that can't see you.
  • Creatures that can't see you have disadvantage on attack rolls against you.

Ending hidden status:

  • You are no longer hidden when you make an attack (hit or miss), cast a spell, or make noise.
  • If a creature discovers your location through other means (hearing you, truesight, etc.), you are no longer hidden from that creature.
  • Moving out of cover into plain sight ends hiding.

In combat: Hiding in combat typically requires using your action. Rogues can Hide as a bonus action via Cunning Action. Lightfoot Halflings can attempt to hide behind a creature at least one size larger.

Attacking from hidden: The advantage from being hidden applies only to the first attack. After the attack (hit or miss), your position is revealed. A Rogue's Sneak Attack benefits enormously from hiding each turn (attack with advantage, trigger Sneak Attack).
