Disengage Action

Your movement doesn't provoke opportunity attacks for the rest of the turn. Uses your action unless a feature grants it as a bonus action.

Disengage Action (Combat Action Detail)

The Disengage action prevents your movement from provoking opportunity attacks for the rest of the turn.

How it works: When you take the Disengage action, your movement does not provoke opportunity attacks for the remainder of the turn. This applies to all creatures, not just one — you can safely move away from multiple enemies.

Does not grant extra movement: Disengage only prevents opportunity attacks. It does not increase your speed. If you need to move far AND avoid opportunity attacks, you need to combine Disengage with other movement options.

Uses your action: Taking the Disengage action means you cannot also Attack, Cast a Spell, or take other actions on the same turn (unless you have a feature that grants Disengage as a bonus action).

Bonus action Disengage:

  • RogueCunning Action (level 2): Disengage as a bonus action, freeing your action for attacks.
  • Monk — Step of the Wind (level 2): Disengage as a bonus action for 1 ki point (also doubles jump distance).
  • Goblin — Nimble Escape: Disengage as a bonus action.

Tactical use: Disengage is essential for squishy characters (casters, archers) who find themselves in melee. Without it, moving away provokes a free attack from every adjacent enemy.

Mobile feat: After making a melee attack against a creature, that creature can't make opportunity attacks against you for the rest of the turn — without needing the Disengage action. This only applies to creatures you attacked, not all creatures.
