Combat Actions
Each turn: one action (Attack, Cast, Dash, Dodge, etc.), one bonus action if granted, one reaction per round, and one free object interaction.
On your turn in combat, you can move up to your speed and take one action. The action economy breaks down into three types of activity:
Action
Your main activity each turn. Common actions:
- Attack: Make one melee or ranged weapon attack (or more with Extra Attack).
- Cast a Spell: Cast a spell with a casting time of 1 action.
- Dash: Double your movement speed for the turn.
- Disengage: Your movement doesn't provoke opportunity attacks for the rest of the turn.
- Dodge: Until the start of your next turn, attack rolls against you have disadvantage (if you can see the attacker), and you make Dexterity saving throws with advantage. You lose this benefit if you are incapacitated or your speed drops to 0.
- Help: Give an ally advantage on their next ability check or attack roll against a target within 5 feet of you.
- Hide: Make a Dexterity (Stealth) check to become hidden.
- Ready: Prepare an action to trigger in response to a specific event (uses your reaction when triggered). You can only Ready an action — you cannot Ready a bonus action or movement. Readying a spell requires concentration and consumes the slot even if the trigger never occurs.
- Search: Make a Wisdom (Perception) or Intelligence (Investigation) check.
- Use an Object: Interact with a second object or use a special object feature.
Bonus Action
Some class features, spells, and abilities grant a bonus action. You can only take one bonus action per turn, and only if something specifically grants you one.
- Examples: Rogue's Cunning Action, casting a spell with a bonus action casting time, Barbarian's Rage, offhand attack with two-weapon fighting.
- If you cast a spell as a bonus action, the only other spell you can cast that turn is a cantrip with a casting time of 1 action.
Reaction
A special response triggered by a specific event. You get one reaction per round (resets at the start of your turn).
- Examples: Opportunity attack, casting shield or counterspell, Rogue's Uncanny Dodge, readied action trigger.
Free Interactions
You can interact with one object for free during your turn (draw a weapon, open a door, pick up an item). A second object interaction requires the Use an Object action.
