Thin ice

Winter that looks solid but opens beneath you without warning or mercy.

Three Coven Lake starts to freeze in early winter and thaws in early spring, but it doesn't freeze uniformly — it can be two feet thick in one place and just a few inches thick only a few yards away. Footsteps fall hollow; water or slush wells up; something underfoot cracks and lurches — then SPLOOSH. Anyone falling through risks panic and drowning; even those who manage to escape are probably already suffering hypothermia.
