From the Pages of History

While these rules are written under the assumption that you're playing a Pathfinder character in the Starfinder setting (or vice versa), there are generations of social and technological growth between the two eras! You can adjust these rules to account for characters from a post-industrial but pre-spacefaring era, including characters from our own time here on Earth! Finding a middle ground between the two rules might seem daunting, but plenty of technology and classes from both games can be adapted to fit characters from a contemporary setting with very few adjustments and have an arguably easier time adjusting to life in the Starfinder setting.
