Khefak Biogenetics bioengineered khefaks to consume scrap thasteron so the waste could be refined into starship fuel. These creatures eventually became a prime example of a solution becoming a problem of its own. After the discovery of Drift travel, Akiton's thasteron market plummeted, removing the need for mining infrastructure, including khefaks. Khefak Biogenetics destroyed the production facilities, thinking they'd completely eradicated their creations. Khefaks are hardy, however, and the few survivors left the facilities. Beyond thasteron, they subsisted on inorganic materials, and their rapid reproduction rate allowed them to quickly spread all over Akiton. Some stowed away on starships, allowing them to spread throughout The Pact Worlds. Members Khefak (Creature -1), Thasteron Khefak (Creature 3) Khefak Farming On Akiton, khefaks have become a natural resource. The population must be kept under control, but those who hunt them can profit from the remains. Khefak exoskeletons are useful for building radiation-resistant armor and can also be refined into minerals, reclaiming the materials the creatures have consumed. Khefak farmers train them to consume valuable salvage so that their exoskeletons can be sold for even more profit. Most regions of Akiton explicitly ban this practice since the danger of keeping khefaks near civilized areas is too great a risk.
