Proficiency Ranks
Five-rank competency system (Untrained/Trained/Expert/Master/Legendary) adding rank bonus + level to all trained checks, with rank-gated skill actions.
Proficiency is the core competency system in PF2e. Every skill, weapon, armor, save, and spell attack has a proficiency rank.
The Five Ranks:
| Rank | Bonus | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Untrained | +0 | No added bonus. Just ability modifier (level is NOT added when untrained) |
| Trained | +2 | Basic competency. Required for certain skill actions |
| Expert | +4 | Significant skill. Required for harder DCs |
| Master | +6 | Professional excellence |
| Legendary | +8 | Superhuman mastery |
Formula: Proficiency bonus = Rank bonus + Character Level (when trained or above)
Example: Level 5 character with Expert in Athletics → +4 (expert) + 5 (level) = +9, then add STR modifier.
Key Implication: Being Untrained does not add your level to the roll. This is a massive gap — an untrained level 10 character rolls only their ability modifier, while a trained level 10 character adds level + 2.
Proficiency Gating: Some skill actions require a minimum proficiency rank. Treat Wounds requires Trained Medicine; Identify Magic requires Trained in the relevant tradition skill.
Class Advancement: Your class determines when skills and attacks advance. Fighters reach Master weapon proficiency at level 13 and Legendary at level 19.
