Ability Scores and Boosts
PF2e ability score system using sequential Boosts from ancestry, background, class, and 4 free choices, each adding +2 to scores 18 or lower.
PF2e uses six ability scores: Strength (STR), Dexterity (DEX), Constitution (CON), Intelligence (INT), Wisdom (WIS), and Charisma (CHA). Each score has a modifier: subtract 10, then halve and round down (score 10 = +0, score 18 = +4, score 8 = −1).
Ability Score Generation — The Boost System:
In PF2e Remaster, characters use the Ability Boost system instead of rolling:
- Ancestry Boosts: Your ancestry grants 2 specific boosts and sometimes 1 flaw. (e.g., Elf grants DEX and INT boosts, CON flaw)
- Background Boosts: Your background grants 2 ability boosts — one from a limited list, one free.
- Class Boost: Your class grants 1 ability boost to your Key Ability score.
- Four Free Boosts: You receive 4 free boosts to place in any ability scores. You cannot apply two boosts to the same score at this step.
Applying Boosts:
- If a score is 18 or lower: +2 (e.g., 10 → 12)
- If a score is already 19 or higher: +1 instead
Flaws: Ancestry flaws reduce a score by 2 at the end of the boost process.
Starting Total: A well-optimized character can reach 18 in a primary stat at level 1. Average stats are 12-14.
Future Boosts: At levels 5, 10, 15, and 20, you receive 4 more free boosts — one to each of 4 different scores.
