Valued Conditions and Stacking

Valued conditions don't stack (take higher value). Each has specific expiry rules: Frightened auto-reduces, Sickened requires retching, Drained needs rest, Stunned consumes actions...

Many PF2e conditions have numerical values that determine their severity. Understanding how they stack and expire is essential.

Valued Conditions: Conditions like Frightened, Sickened, Clumsy, Drained, Enfeebled, Stupefied, Doomed, Dying, Wounded, Slowed, and Stunned carry a numerical value (e.g., Frightened 2). The value determines the severity of the penalty or effect.

Status Penalties (Frightened, Sickened, Stupefied): These impose a status penalty to checks and DCs equal to their value. Frightened applies to ALL checks and DCs. Sickened applies to all checks and DCs. Stupefied applies to all checks and DCs involving mental actions, plus spell DCs and spell attack rolls, and you must roll a flat check equal to 5 + stupefied value or lose the spell.

Physical Penalties (Clumsy, Enfeebled, Drained): Clumsy penalizes Dex-based checks and AC. Enfeebled penalizes Str-based checks and melee damage. Drained penalizes Con-based checks, reduces max HP by your level times the drained value, and can only be removed by rest.

Stacking Rules: If you gain a condition you already have, take the higher value (they don't stack). Frightened 2 + new Frightened 1 = Frightened 2 (no change). Frightened 2 + new Frightened 3 = Frightened 3.

Condition Expiry:

  • Frightened: Decreases by 1 at the end of each of your turns.
  • Sickened: Persists until you spend an action to retch (Fortitude save vs the sickened DC to reduce by 1).
  • Clumsy/Enfeebled: Usually tied to a source duration. Ends when the source ends.
  • Drained: Only decreases by 1 per full night's rest.
  • Wounded: Only clears with a full night's rest or when restored to full HP by magical healing.
  • Doomed: Only decreases when the source is removed (e.g., curse lifted).
  • Stunned: You lose actions equal to the stunned value; it decreases as actions are consumed.
