Condition — Controlled
Controlled: another creature decides your actions. Uses YOUR stats. More dangerous than Confused because it's directed. Broken by saves, dispel, or duration expiry.
Another creature decides your actions. You are a puppet.
Mechanical Effects:
- The controlling creature chooses your actions, targets, and movement
- You lose all ability to act independently
- You can't use reactions unless the controlling creature allows it
- The controller uses YOUR stats, proficiencies, and abilities — not their own
- You know you are being controlled (usually) but can't prevent it
How Applied:
- Domination spells (like dominate)
- Some monster abilities (vampiric domination)
- Rare magical artifacts or curses
How Removed:
- Duration expiry
- Breaking the controlling effect (saving throw at end of each turn if applicable)
- The controller releasing you
- Dispel magic or freedom of movement (depending on source)
Important Notes:
- Unlike Confused, Controlled is directed — the controller picks specific targets and actions
- The controlled character uses their own attack bonuses, spell DCs, etc.
- Some control effects let the target attempt saves each round to break free
- This is one of the most feared conditions because it turns a party member into an enemy with full capabilities
Interaction with Confused: Controlled overrides Confused. You can't be both — Controlled takes priority because it imposes specific actions rather than random ones.
