Healing Unconscious Creatures
Any healing at 0 HP restores consciousness and resets death saves. Healing word works at 60 ft range as a bonus action — the target doesn't need to hear the caster.
Healing spells work on unconscious allies and immediately restore them to consciousness if they gain at least 1 hit point.
Key rules:
- Any amount of healing (even 1 HP) applied to a creature at 0 HP removes the dying condition, restores consciousness, and resets death saving throw tallies.
- Spells like healing word (range 60 feet, bonus action, 1d4 + spellcasting modifier) and cure wounds (range touch, action, 1d8 + spellcasting modifier) both work on unconscious allies.
- No special requirements: The target does not need to hear the caster, see the caster, or be conscious for healing magic to take effect. Despite healing word having a verbal component, the verbal component is the caster's requirement to speak — not the target's requirement to hear.
- Ranged healing: Healing word is particularly useful for reviving downed allies because it has a 60-foot range and costs only a bonus action, leaving your action free for other activities.
Stabilizing vs. healing: Stabilizing (via Medicine check DC 10 or healer's kit) stops death saves but leaves the creature at 0 HP and unconscious. Healing actually restores HP and consciousness.
