Occupied Space
A space currently containing a creature. Size depends on creature size category; movement and cover rules key off it.
A space is occupied when a creature is in it. The size of the space is determined by the creature's size category (Tiny, Small, Medium, Large, Huge, Gargantuan).
Space by creature size:
- Tiny: 2½ × 2½ ft (four can share a 5-ft square)
- Small / Medium: 5 × 5 ft (one creature per space)
- Large: 10 × 10 ft (a 2×2 block of squares)
- Huge: 15 × 15 ft (a 3×3 block)
- Gargantuan: 20 × 20 ft or more (a 4×4 block or larger)
Rules about occupied space:
- A creature cannot end its movement in a space occupied by another creature (with exceptions: a Tiny creature can occupy the same space as a non-hostile creature; a creature can move through an ally's space freely but not stop there; a creature can move through the space of a hostile creature only if that creature is two sizes larger or smaller)
- An occupied space generally provides cover to the creature behind it (half cover or three-quarters at the DM's discretion)
- Two creatures of the same size cannot share a space unless one is unconscious or specifically allowed by a feature (riding mount, swarm, etc.)
- A creature that is squeezing through a space half its width treats the space as Difficult Terrain and has disadvantage on attack rolls and Dexterity saves
Contrast: See Unoccupied Space for the inverse — and note that an Unoccupied Space may still contain hazards, objects, or terrain that affect movement.
