Mounted Combat

Rules for mounting, controlling, and fighting from a mount including falling, flying mounts, and controlled vs. independent mounts.

A willing creature at least one size larger than you and with appropriate anatomy can serve as a mount.

Mounting and Dismounting

Once during your move, you can mount or dismount a creature within 5 feet. Doing so costs movement equal to half your speed. If an effect moves your mount against its will, you must make a DC 10 DEX saving throw or fall off, landing prone within 5 feet. If knocked prone while mounted, the same save applies.

Controlling a Mount

Intelligent creatures act independently. An untrained mount (controlled) can only Dash, Disengage, or Dodge on its turn. It moves on your initiative and acts on the turn you mount it. A controlled mount doesn't take independent actions.

While Mounted

  • You can use your mount's movement instead of your own
  • You can make attacks and cast spells normally while mounted
  • If the mount provokes an opportunity attack, the attacker can target you or the mount
  • If the mount is forced to move (frightened, etc.), you make a DC 10 DEX save or fall off prone

Falling Off

If you fall off your mount, you land prone in a space within 5 feet of the mount. If knocked unconscious, you automatically fall off.

Flying Mounts

A flying mount that is knocked prone, has its speed reduced to 0, or is otherwise deprived of movement begins to fall. If the mount falls, the rider falls too and takes falling damage unless the mount descends safely or the rider uses a reaction to break the fall.
