Grapple and Shove
Replace an attack to grapple (contested [[compendium:skill:Athletics]] vs [[compendium:skill:Athletics]]/[[compendium:skill:Acrobatics]], target speed becomes 0) or shove (push 5 feet or knock prone).
Grappling and shoving are special melee attacks that replace one of your attacks when you take the Attack action.
Grapple
Requirement: You need at least one free hand. The target must be no more than one size larger than you and within your reach.
The check: Make a Strength (Athletics) check contested by the target's Strength (Athletics) or Dexterity (Acrobatics) check (target's choice).
On success: The target gains the grappled condition. Its speed becomes 0, and it can't benefit from speed bonuses.
Moving a grappled creature: You can drag or carry the creature with you, but your speed is halved (unless the creature is two or more sizes smaller than you).
Escaping a grapple: The grappled creature can use its action to try to escape. It makes a Strength (Athletics) or Dexterity (Acrobatics) check contested by your Strength (Athletics).
Grapple ends when:
- The grappler is incapacitated.
- The grappled creature is moved out of the grappler's reach by an effect (e.g., thunderwave).
- The grappled creature successfully escapes.
Shove
Requirement: The target must be no more than one size larger than you and within your reach.
The check: Make a Strength (Athletics) check contested by the target's Strength (Athletics) or Dexterity (Acrobatics) check (target's choice).
On success: Choose one:
- Push the target 5 feet away from you.
- Knock the target prone.
Tactical combinations: Grappling a creature and then shoving it prone is a powerful combo — the target has disadvantage on attacks, melee attacks against it have advantage, and it can't stand up because its speed is 0 from the grapple.
