Useful or Valuable Flora
The World's End is generous to those who know what to look for. Poisons hide in plain sight (death cap, hemlock, belladonna, foxglove, fire lily, oleander, yew, and the wrong part of many edible plants); medicinal herbs grow as poultice, chew, incense, tea, extract, or oil; and the wild has its own pharmacopoeia — glowing brightberries, paralytic elksheart, river-mouth violet lotus, twisting pine sap, light-eating Vanta's Blade, ward-ash hartwood, edible snowembers that warm you in midwinter.
Generating new flora
Decide where it's found and how the PCs encounter it. Then pick or roll for:
- Why it's useful or valuable — in the field, back home, or both
- In the field — provisions, poultice or remedy, Stock for a Blessed's pouch, fills a need, grants a benefit, or provides a path forward
- Back home — curiosity, common craft material, luxury, drug or poison, charm or ward, Surplus food, steading materials, high-quality goods, a wonder, or a legendary substance
- Form-factor — small item, pouchful, sackful, immobile mass, or any of the above with extensive processing or fragility
- Qualities (pick 1d4) — attracts a pest, dangerous to handle, harmful to the soil, horrid taste, finicky, cursed by superstition, tied to a god or hero, easy to work, especially potent, delicious, or thought extinct
- Distinctive trait — paired with a hazardous or innocuous neighbor, grows in unusual conditions, has a particular pattern, attracts a specific creature, intricate texture, distinct configuration, looks like something else, strong odor, or unusual color
Then decide what it is (lichen, moss, mushroom, fern, sedge, plant, weed, vine, briar, shrub, succulent, deciduous tree, or conifer), what part is useful, and how it's prepared.
Cultivation
If the PCs want to cultivate one, Make a Plan. Requirements: acquire seeds or cuttings, learn the secrets of cultivation, commune with the flora's spirit, have the steading Pull Together to clear a plot, and accept the season-to-year-plus timeline. The flora may attract a threat, fail to thrive, or spread unchecked.
Ask the table
- What's distinctive about it? How did you spot it?
- What is it (sometimes) called? Who taught you?
- What superstition hangs over it? How did it come to be?
- Why is it thought impossible to cultivate?
- What bird, critter, or bug eats it or spreads it?
- Who back home would be most excited by this find?
