The Player Agenda

Three goals shape every choice you make at the table as a player. The game's rules and structure assume you're pursuing these and nothing else — not winning, not optimizing, not testing your skill against the GM's.

  • Portray a compelling character. Your PC is a protagonist. Give them hopes, inner conflicts, relationships, a voice. The playbook sketches them; you bring them to life.
  • Engage with the fictional world. Don't just react to what the GM presents — care about it, contribute to it, suggest details, get invested in NPCs.
  • Play to find out what happens. Hold your ideas about your character's arc lightly. The dice are there to surprise you. Sometimes your PC won't get what they want, and that's the game working.

The GM has a parallel agenda — portray a rich and mysterious world, punctuate the PCs' lives with adventure, play to find out what happens. When both sides pursue these goals, the story unfolds organically rather than being authored in advance.
