The Fields

A thousand acres of shared labor and shared hunger, tended by the whole village and owned by none.

A thousand acres of communal labor, and no one family owns a furrow of it. The Fields stretch around Stonetop — a third fallow each year, the rest growing barley, oats, beans, and potatoes — worked by villagers rather than parcelled to kin.

The Old Wall wraps around the fields about a mile from the Stone. Within that boundary crops can be managed; beyond it, the prairie grasses of The Flats resist taming.

Hooks

Use the Fields for seasons, work, shortage, communal obligation, failed experiments beyond the Old Wall, and threats that endanger Stonetop slowly by attacking food rather than walls.
