The spear was carved from an elder tree, and the first time you plunge it into a spirit or demon, visions reveal the trials its making demands of any true bearer. Yet the tree holds something dark and terrible bound deep among its roots, and every power drawn from the spear strains those roots a little further. Those who wield it long enough learn that the elder tree's prisoner is patient, and that its freedom is the price the spear was always meant to extract.

The first time you plunge it into a spirit or demon, visions reveal tasks: impale a foul spirit until it burns away, water the elder tree of its making with your blood, face the Pale Hunter, spend a naked hungry fortnight in the wild with only the spear, or pierce your own hand and give it a shard of soul. Marking three tasks unlocks moves such as Whispers, Promise of Doom, Roots of the Elder Tree, and Darkness Lingers. Those powers reveal active spirits, swear doom against a spirit or demon, bind one into the earth, or steal one of its moves, but consequences strain the elder tree and what it holds beneath.
