A computer's stat block is only necessary when hacking the computer is the primary obstacle. As many vulnerabilities and access points can take several minutes to bypass, consider using a single access point with no vulnerabilities or additional success benefits if your players are Hacking during an encounter. You can use this simplified method to allow players to Hack a basic computer with a complete stat block to perform simple commands, such as unlocking a door, but doing so shouldn't award XP or additional success benefits, and an additional check should be required for each subsequent command. Computer's Name --- This provides information about the computer and its purpose. --- Access Point Each access point should be noted as physical (if it requires the character to be physically adjacent) or remote (if it can be accessed from a distance). This is followed by the number of successes required to Hack the access point. The DC of skill checks that can be attempted to use the access point are listed here, followed by the minimum proficiency rank required for the skills (if any) in parentheses. Each access point is associated with its own unique vulnerabilities and countermeasures. If a computer has multiple access points, these access points (and their associated vulnerabilities and countermeasures) are listed separately. Vulnerabilities Each vulnerability lists in parentheses the DC of any skill checks that can be attempted to exploit it, followed by a value of how much it lowers the access point's DC. Some computers don't have this entry. Countermeasures Lists the nature of the countermeasures that trigger after reaching the number of failures in the parentheses; the DC of any skill checks required to notice and disable the countermeasures are also here. Some countermeasures have the persistent trait, meaning once they've been triggered, they automatically trigger again at the end of each ensuing round. Persistent countermeasures can be disabled even after they've been triggered, and doing so prevents them from triggering again (but doesn't erase the effects of previous triggers). --- Critical Success This additional bonus is earned if a character achieves a number of successes equal to two times more than is necessary to Hack an access point, or if more than one access point is successfully Hacked. While this is most common for access points that only require one success, it can also happen when multiple characters attempt to Hack a computer at the same time. Some computers don't have this entry. Success The basic computer functions and benefits available when the characters successfully Hack this computer. Sample Vulnerabilities and Countermeasures Below are several vulnerabilities PCs might be able to exploit and countermeasures they might face while attempting to hack. These entries could appear on computers of any level and thus don't use specific DCs; they should instead beconsidered as potential options when building a computer to hack. Vulnerabilities Deduce username or password (Perception, Society, or Lore relevant to target) Call customer service for access (Deception or Diplomacy) Steal or spoof two-factor authentication device (Crafting or Thievery) Program keylogger in music file (Computers or Performance) Find traces of another hacker you can convince to give you access (Diplomacy or Society) Survey outside server farm to find buried cable (Nature or Survival) Use divination to determine a user's password (Occultism or Religion) Bribe or threaten server administrator (Diplomacy or Intimidation) Physically retrieve the data from an autopilot module mounted on the roof of a gravtrain (Acrobatics or Piloting) Create a fake site to phish for a password (Computers or Society) Phreak the target's server with a whistle (Crafting or Performance) Pretend to be an investor, a partner, or a regulator (Deception or Lore relevant to target) Denial-of-service attack (Computers standard; Diplomacy or Performance to rally other hackers to your aid) Cast a ritual to access magitech components (Arcana, Nature, Occultism, or Religion) Jury-rig electromagnetic winch to wipe back-up server (Crafting or Piloting) Join cleaning crew to gain access to building where server is kept (Deception or Society) Steal comm unit from employee on lunch break (Stealth or Thievery) Scale communication tower for physical access to cables (Acrobatics or Athletics) Fake fingerprint authentication (Deception or Medicine) Play a challenging vidgame to discover a hidden zone and retrieve a backup of the data (Piloting or Vidgame Lore) Countermeasures A system admin bans or locks the account; Notice Computers or Perception; Disable Deception or Intimidation You think you've succeeded but instead find misleading information or attract authorities; Notice Computers, Crafting, or Perception; Disable Stealth or Thievery The folders are a mess, and files are being deleted quickly; Notice Society or Survival; Disable Computers or Crafting The account is locked until you get a dongle or comm unit to authorize access; Notice Perception; Disable Crafting, Thievery, or related Lore An admin notices your attempts and blocks your access; Notice Perception; Disable Computers, Diplomacy, or Intimidation A security guard in your physical location notices you and asks for your identification; Notice Perception; Disable Deception or Stealth A Hellknight hacker notices your infosphere vigilantism and attempts to track down your location; Notice Society; Disable Stealth or Survival An administrator catches the strange network activity and threatens to report you; Notice Perception; Disable Deception, Diplomacy, or Intimidation The computer contracts a magitech virus that flashes hypnotic visuals to confuse you; Notice Arcana or Occultism; Disable Arcana, Occultism, or Will save The computer begins sprouting plants as a First World viral curse takes hold; Notice Perception; Disable Nature or Survival An EMP takes out the entire database; Notice Perception; Disable Athletics or Thievery
