Riveted iron plates over sloped timbers deflect cannon fire, letting a single gunboat blockade an entire port against wooden ships.
This heavy gunboat is framed in solid hardwood timbers and clad in thick iron plates riveted together to protect everything above the waterline. The timbers slope inboard to deflect siege projectiles and cannon shots, while a twin pair of propellers — spun by steam from magically fired boilers — drives it forward and vents glowing blue smoke through twin smokestacks.
So formidable is the design that a single ironclad has been known to blockade an entire port by itself against more traditional wooden ships.
