The Umbral Echo

A shadow-realm where the material world mirrors itself in twisted decay—useful shortcuts through distances come with fatal entrapment risks.

A shadow-realm reflection of the material world where everything is muted, distorted, and watched by unseen presences.

Environment Shadow plane

The Umbral Echo is a demiplane that overlaps with the material world like a dark reflection in still water. Locations from the material plane appear here in twisted, decayed forms — a thriving city becomes a crumbling ruin, a sunny meadow becomes a field of dead grass under a sky of perpetual twilight. Colors are muted to grays and deep purples, sounds are dampened as if heard through water, and shadows move independently of their sources. The Echo is not empty — incorporeal entities native to the plane drift through its distorted landscapes, ranging from curious observers to predatory shades that feed on living warmth. Travel through the Echo can serve as a shortcut through material-plane distances, as its geography is compressed, but lingering too long drains vitality and eventually traps travelers as permanent shadow-residents.
