The Pallid Athenaeum

A lich's laboratory still running itself—undead servants tend experiments and forge phylacteries in a complex its vanished master abandoned.

The abandoned laboratory of a lich who vanished centuries ago. Its experiments continue autonomously, tended by mindless undead servants.

Environment Underground

The Pallid Athenaeum is carved into the bedrock beneath a ruined tower, its clinical stone corridors lined with shelves of preserved specimens, alchemical apparatus, and meticulously organized research notes written in ciphered script. The lich who created it disappeared long ago, but its contingency enchantments keep the laboratory operational — undead servants shuffle through their routines, experiments bubble in sealed chambers, and arcane defenses remain fully active. The deeper one ventures, the more disturbing the research becomes: soul-trapping devices, flesh-crafting vats, and a phylactery forge whose purpose is unmistakable. Magical traps here are sophisticated, targeting specific creature types and adapting to intruders' tactics.
