Weapon Traits and Groups
Weapon traits (Agile, Finesse, Reach, Deadly, Fatal, etc.) modify attack mechanics. Weapon groups (Sword, Hammer, Bow, etc.) unlock critical specialization effects at Master proficiency.
Every weapon has a set of traits that define how it functions mechanically, plus a weapon group that determines its critical specialization effect.
Key Weapon Traits:
- Agile: Reduced MAP (-4/-8 instead of -5/-10). Ideal for second and third attacks.
- Finesse: Use Dexterity instead of Strength for attack rolls (damage still uses Strength unless specified).
- Reach: Adds 5 feet to your melee reach (typically 10 ft total). Allows flanking from farther away.
- Two-Hand: Can be wielded in two hands for a larger damage die (e.g., Bastard Sword: 1d8 one-hand, 1d12 two-hand).
- Versatile: Can deal an alternate damage type (e.g., Versatile S lets a piercing weapon deal slashing).
- Deadly (dX): On a critical hit, add extra dice of the specified size (e.g., Deadly d10 adds 1d10 to crit damage).
- Fatal (dX): On a critical hit, change the weapon's damage die to the specified size AND add one extra die.
- Backstabber: Deal +1 precision damage to off-guard targets (or +2 with a greater striking rune).
- Forceful: Second hit per turn adds +1 damage, third hit +2.
- Sweep: +1 circumstance bonus to attack on the second target you attack per turn.
- Propulsive: Add half your Strength modifier to damage on ranged attacks.
- Thrown: Can be thrown as a ranged weapon with the listed range increment.
Weapon Groups and Critical Specialization: At higher proficiency (Master+), you unlock your weapon group's critical specialization effect:
- Sword: Persistent bleed damage equal to the number of weapon damage dice.
- Hammer: Knock the target prone.
- Pick: Extra damage equal to weapon damage dice bypassing resistance.
- Bow: Pin the target, immobilizing them until they Escape.
- Knife: Target takes a -2 to AC until start of your next turn.
- Spear: Target is clumsy 1 until start of your next turn.
- Axe: Persistent bleed damage equal to number of weapon damage dice.
