Cast a Spell in Combat
Spells cost 1-3 actions based on components. Attack spells use MAP; save spells bypass it. Manipulate components can be disrupted by [[compendium:action:Attack of Opportunity]].
Casting a spell in PF2e uses the Cast a Spell activity, which typically costs 2 actions. The action cost varies by spell component.
Spell Components and Action Costs:
- Somatic (1 action): A physical gesture. Has the manipulate trait, which can trigger Attack of Opportunity from creatures that have it.
- Verbal (1 action): A spoken incantation. Has the concentrate trait.
- Material (1 action): Drawing or manipulating a material component. Has the manipulate trait.
- Most spells require both somatic and verbal components (2 actions total). Some require all three (3 actions). Cantrips and focus spells may require only 1-2 components.
Spell Attack Rolls: Some spells require an attack roll (spell attack modifier = ability modifier + proficiency + level). These are subject to MAP, so casting an attack spell after a Strike is less accurate.
Saving Throw Spells: Many spells force the target to roll a save instead. The caster does not roll — the spell DC is 10 + ability modifier + proficiency + level. Saves bypass MAP entirely since the caster makes no attack roll.
Sustaining Spells: Some ongoing spells require you to Sustain a Spell (1 action, concentrate) each turn to maintain the effect. You can sustain one spell per action spent. If you don't sustain, the spell ends.
Disrupting Spellcasting: If a caster takes damage from a reaction (like Attack of Opportunity) while casting a spell with the manipulate trait, the spell is disrupted and lost. This is why Attack of Opportunity is so threatening to casters.
