The Core Loop — Roll + Label

Roll 2d6 + label. 10+ strong, 7-9 partial, 6- GM move. Labels are identity, not skill.

The Core Loop

Masks runs on the 2d6 + label PbtA engine. When a basic move or playbook move triggers, you roll 2d6 and add the relevant label.

Outcomes:

  • 10+ — strong success. You get what you wanted; pick the best option.
  • 7–9 — partial success. You get something, but the GM hands you a complication, a cost, or a hard choice.
  • 6 or under — the GM makes a move. Mark experience.

Labels are the five identity stats: Danger, Freak, Savior, Superior, Mundane. They are not skills; they are how the world sees you and how you see yourself. They shift during play when somebody convinces you that you are more or less of one thing.

Almost every roll in Masks is a roll about identity. The Bull who Directly Engages a Threat with +2 Danger is performing the version of themselves the world keeps insisting on. Every shift is a referendum on who they want to be instead.
