A desolate crossroads marked by an ancient gallows tree. Travelers avoid it after dark, when the restless dead are said to bargain with the living.

Four dirt roads converge at a windswept hilltop dominated by a massive dead oak — the Gallows Tree — its bare branches hung with frayed rope ends that sway in winds no one else can feel. A weathered signpost offers directions to distant settlements, but the paint has long since faded to illegibility. By day, it is merely grim. By night, pale figures gather at the crossroads, offering knowledge, treasure, or favors to those desperate or foolish enough to bargain. Every deal has a price that is never what it seems.
